PROFESSION:
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN RIDING MOTORCYCLES: I am purely a pillion ‘rider’. I started flapping off the back of Rolf’s street bike on an off-road track about 30 years ago. This touring is new to us.
WHAT RIDING EXPERIENCE HAVE YOU GOT: Pillion experience – a couple of short trips around SA – Mpumalanga and Natal South Coast and the Zim-Moz Recce run.
WHAT IS THE FURTHEST YOU HAVE RIDDEN IN ONE DAY: +- 1400 km – Johannesburg to Mutare, Zimbabwe.
WHAT ADVENTURE MOTORCYCLE TRAVEL HAVE YOU DONE ACROSS THE SA BORDERS: The Zim–Moz Recce Run.
WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO BOOK ON THE CAPE TO CAIRO 2011: Rolf was very keen to do the trip and I wanted to share it with him.
WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL FEELINGS ABOUT THE LIFE CHANGING UNDERTAKING YOU ARE EMBARKING ON: I see it as a challenge which I am keen to face. I am hoping that my eyes will be pleasantly opened to the rest of Africa.
WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS: I don’t really know what to expect. I was a bit apprehensive about the Zim-Moz Recce Run – driving throughout the night and just being in Africa. That trip turned out to be absolutely stunning so I am hoping my vague apprehensions about heading further into Africa will also translate into an amazing trip. I am expecting to come back with a bucket-load of photographs and some very special memories.
WHAT ARE YOU FEARING THE MOST AND WHAT ARE YOU EXPECTING FROM THIS EXPERIENCE: I have two biggest fears. One is that something happens to the bike or Rolf or me that stops us from completing the trip. The other is the ‘badies’ – bandits, drunk border guards, unreasonable policemen etc.
